How to Clean a Blue Star Sapphire Ring

A blue star sapphire features striking inclusions, which include what appears a six-armed star. Blue stars require little care to keep them brilliant and looking ideal but you can take some precautions to prevent damage. Like other sapphires and precious stones, blue stars have a smooth surface, which can sustain permanent abrasions if handled improperly. You can clean a blue star sapphire ring in a few simple steps leaving both the stone and setting shining.

Instructions

    1

Fill a small bowl with sapphire jewelry cleaner and drop the blue star ring into the liquid. Leave the ring to soak for 5 minutes to loosen any dirt and grime on the surface.

    2

Take the ring out of the bowl and gently brush the sapphire with a jewelry brush. Work the bristles lightly over the stone to remove residue and build up, on the top and the underside of the gem.

    3

Dip the ring in the bowl of cleaner to rinse the stone; then inspect it carefully. Use the brush to clean any remnants of dirt, then clean the setting around the sapphire. Work the brush into any crevices within the setting and the prongs, which hold the stone on place.

    4

Hold the ring under cool, running water. Rinse the ring thoroughly to remove any traces of the cleaning solution, then pat the ring dry. Let the ring dry thoroughly before wearing it.
