How to Change a Broken Clasp on a Necklace

Don't panic if the clasp on your necklace breaks, even if it is your favorite necklace. You dont have to go out and buy a new chain. And you certainly dont have to drop it off at the jeweler to have it fixed. All you have to do is fix it yourself for a few dollars and less than ten minutes of your time.

Instructions

    1

Take a trip to the craft store and pick up a package of clasps. Im partial to the swivel lobster clasps. It takes minimal effort to close these as well as to attach them to a necklace. These clasps cost around $4.00 for a package of about four. If the last link on the end of the necklace also broke off, pick up some small jump rings to repair it. They cost around $4.00 as well.

    2

Take a pair of wire cutters and carefully cut off the broken clasp. There is a small ring on the bottom of the clasp that attaches it to the necklace. That is the part that you want to cut if it is still attached.

    3

If you need to repair the broken last link that is supposed to be attached to the clasp, open up a jump ring and attach it to the last link of the chain that isnt broken. Before you seal it closed, link the new clasp to it via the ring on the bottom of it.

    4

Use your long needle nose pliers to close the jump ring. You can do this by opening the pliers, placing it on the outside of the jump ring. Slowly squeeze it until the ring closes. Examine the ring to make sure that there is no small gap. This will prevent the clasp from falling through.

    5

Close your necklace now that the new clasp is attached.
