The U.S. government and several Native American organizations have created laws and guidelines designed to protect the authenticity of Native American crafts.

When shopping for Native American jewelry, it is important to locate a reputable seller who will be able to verify the quality, authenticity and origins of vintage pieces.

Find a Reputable Seller

The best way to find authentic Native American jewelry is to contact an organization such as the Indian Arts and Crafts Alliance and select a business or craftsman who is registered as an official Native American seller with authentic merchandise. Many of these dealers have websites that allow you to shop for and purchase authentic vintage pieces online.

If you are having a problem finding a certified merchant who sells the item you are looking for, inquire with the IACA for recommendations.

Examine Jewelry

Native American vintage items should be well-crafted. According to the IACA, the images should be clear with unwavering lines and well-cut, uniform stones. Vintage pieces may show signs of age, but should still appear well-made.

Look for the artist's signature or "hallmark" on the piece. Native American artists typically sign their work, and verifying a signature can help determine the origins and authenticity of vintage jewelry.

Verify Authenticity

According to the IACA, "by law, any item sold as Indian or Native American-made, must be the creation of an individual who is a member of a state or federally recognized tribe or tribally certified as an Indian artisan."

Before purchasing vintage Navajo jewelry, be sure to ask the seller to certify that the item was Indian made. You should purchase items from an established dealer who is willing and able to document the piece's authenticity.
