The most common traditional clasp for a strand of pearls is a hook and a filigree "ovalish" shape, as it is not at all obvious how the closure works. You do not want to hook the hook around the base of the oval. That will not be secure. Sometimes strands of pearls have a screw closure. Costume pearls might have a ring closure.
Instructions
Hook Clasp
- 1
Place the pearls around your neck.
2Hold the hook perpendicular to the "oval" and stick the open end through the very end of the shape. The flat sides of the hook and the clasp should both be closeest to your neck. There is a bar at the point of the shape that the hook goes over.
3Pull the hook down so the hook hangs from the metal bar. Turn the hook so both sides of the clasp are in a straight line.
4Squeeze the opening in the hook closed and push it straight into the clasp until it clicks into place.
Screw Clasp
- 5
Put the necklace around your neck.
6Insert the smaller side of the screw into the larger.
7Twist side of the hook in your right hand toward your neck until you meet resistance.
Ring Clasp
- 8
Place the necklace around your neck. Hold the larger ring in your dominant hand.
9Pull the tiny lever on the larger ring back to open the ring.
10Insert the smaller ring into the opening in the larger ring.
11Release the lever.
