Are Topaz & Aquamarine the Same?

Topaz and aquamarine are two of the most popular vibrant blue gems, and are often mistaken for one another. Before purchasing one of these semi-precious stones, it's a good idea to educate yourself on their distinct characteristics.

Semi-Precious Stones

Semi-precious stones, often called gemstones, are usually hard and durable, while at the same time brittle. Gemstones can be cut and polished until they appear either transparent or opaque in color. Though both are classified as semi-precious stones, aquamarine and topaz differ in hardness, composition and refraction. Additionally, aquamarine varies in shades of blue, while topaz is found in multiple colors.

Differences

Aquamarine is a beryl mineral, which is different from the topaz mineral. Beryl is in the hexagonal crystal family, while topaz is in the orthorhombic crystal family. Aquamarine varies in color from light blue to blue-green, while topaz is found in shades of orange, blue, pink, green, violet and white.

Value

Aquamarine is an expensive gem that is rarely found on the market, and its color can actually fade with over-exposure to the sun. Topaz, on the other hand, is less expensive because it is a more abundant gem. Heat radiation enhances the color of topaz and prevents its colors from fading.
