Nostril and septum piercings heal easily if a person follows proper aftercare guidelines. A simple routine of cleaning the piercing and the jewelry each day ensures a healthy piercing site and an aesthetically pleasing adornment to the body.
Timeline
Nostril piercings take roughly six months to a year to completely heal on a healthy individual; septum piercings take six to eight weeks to heal.
Irritation
Irritation is normal during the healing stage. Signs of irritation include swelling, redness, exuding of fluids and crusting around the piercing site and on the jewelry.
Swelling
Swelling can occur around the piercing site for the first two weeks--or longer if the piercing is not properly cared for. Swelling and minor pain can be relieved with an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Infection
The most important rule of safe healing is to keep hands away from the piercing site and the jewelry. A bacterial infection such as staphylococcus can occur if the piercing is contaminated by bacteria-laden hands.
Cleaning
Washing the nose piercing once a day with water and a mild soap will keep it clean. Changing a pillowcase more frequently than usual will help avoid bacteria buildup.
