Diamonds are the most popular precious gemstones. When faceted, they reflect light beautifully. Often associated with love, romance and commitment, they are a traditional component of engagement and wedding rings. But diamond rings make a meaningful gift no matter the occasion, and you don't have to buy a new one. Instead, add diamonds to an existing ring.
Instructions
- 1
Measure each diamond you plan to add to a ring. Note the length, width and depth in millimeters. Most basket settingsmetal settings with prongs that hold gemstones in placeare labeled by their size in millimeters.
2Identify the cut or cuts of the diamonds. Cuts include emerald, princess, round, pear, cushion and rose. Knowing the cut will help you choose settings in the right shape.
3Buy an individual basket setting for each diamond you plan to add to a ring. Find settings at jewelry supply retailers or have a jeweler order them for you. Choose settings in the same type of metal that your ring is made of.
4Set the individual diamonds in their basket settings. Use prong-closing pliers to bend the prongs down over each diamond to hold it in place.
5Apply flux to the places on the basket settings and ring where you will put the solder. Solder using a metal matches the metal in your ring, such as silver or gold. Let the solder solidify and cool.
6Gently clean the ring in warm, soapy water to remove all traces of flux.
