How to Get Small Scratches Out of Silver

Silver is a soft metal and will scratch with extended use. Small scratches are nearly inevitable, but are fairly simple to remove. Once or twice a year giving the silver an extended cleaning and polishing should be enough to remove all light surface scratches from the metal. If you are consistent with cleaning and polishing your silver, there is no need for extensive polishing and your surface scratches will naturally disappear. Always check with your jeweler before trying to remove scratches, especially if you have a warranty on the silver and don't want to void the warranty.

Instructions

    1

Clean and polish your sliver with a silver paste cleaner and a soft cloth. Wipe the cleaner in an up and down motion to clean the silver. Never use a circular motion as this can cause additional scratches in the surface of the silver.

    2

Wipe away any paste residue with a new soft cloth.

    3

Run the buffing wheel against the polishing rogue until the surface of the wheel turns red.

    4

Press the silver into the buffing wheel while it is running. Keep the silver pressed against the wheel until cracks and crevices turn red from the rogue. Polish all sides of the silver.

    5

Remove excess rogue residue by cleaning the sliver in hot soapy water. Gently brush the surface of the silver with a soft toothbrush. Allow the silver to air dry on a towel.

    6

Polish the silver one last time with a silver polishing cloth. This restores ultimate shine to the silver after removing the scratches.
