Semi-precious stones include such stones as opals, onyx, moonstone, amethyst, pearls, turquoise and lapis lazuli. Cleaning semi-precious-stone jewelry involves many of the same techniques used to clean any jewelry. The term semi-precious does not imply that lesser-quality care is needed. By treating your semi-precious stones as you would any prized jewelry, you can ensure your treasured stones look their best and last for generations.
Instructions
- 1
Stones that are organic (were once living tissue) include amber, coral, pearl and ammolite. Organic stones should be cleaned using a soft cloth slightly moistened with water. These stones are soft and porous and will absorb chemical cleaners, oils and other such cleaning liquids, including soap. According to the International Colored Gemstone Association, these stones require special care and should be wiped with a moist cloth using water or a jewelry-cleaning solution labeled as non-ultrasonic (see tips).
2Nonreflective stones that do not reflect light or let light pass through are termed opaque stones. Opaque stones include onyx, jade, turquoise, malachite and lapis lazuli. Wipe opaque stones with a soft cloth slightly moistened with non-ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. These stones require special care because they are prone to chemical absorption. Chemical buildup inside the stone can cause damage, including discoloration.
3Sometimes semi-precious stones are placed in intricate settings that make them hard to reach when cleaning. Clean these stones with a soft jewelry-cleaning brush or a soft toothbrush to remove dirt that has become lodged in the settings. No cleaner is required here. The bristles of the brush loosen the dirt to allow easy removal when you wipe your stones.
