How to Find Out If a Diamond Bracelet Is Real

Diamonds are valuable gems that are popular for wedding rings, necklaces and bracelets. It may be prudent to determine that the diamonds in your bracelet are authentic and quality gems. Tests can be performed at home to find out if a diamond is real, but if any doubts about authenticity remain, consult a professional jeweler.

Instructions

    1

Perform a fog test. Gently rub the surface of the gem clean with a soft cloth and exhale onto the gem. If a fog appears and remains for several seconds, the gem is not authentic. Heat disappears on diamonds immediately.

    2

Conduct a transparency test. Place the diamond upside down on a newspaper. If the words from the newspaper can be seen through the gem, it is not real.

    3

Use a diamond tester to examine the gem. This electronic device examines gems to determine whether a diamond is authentic or fake.

    4

Scratch the diamond across a pane of glass. If the glass shows a scratch mark, the diamond is authentic; if the glass is not scratched, the gem is fake.

    5

Take the gem to a professional jeweler or appraiser for examination. Fake diamonds are made of high quality, and professionals have difficulty determining their authenticity. Find a reputable jeweler with extensive experience.
