How to Convert a Pocket Watch to a Locket

Turn a broken pocket watch into a locket. A useless watch becomes a personalized accessory when a favorite photo is displayed instead of a watch face. Pocket watch lockets make good gifts or sentimental keepsakes.

Instructions

    1

Gather necessary tools so they are within arm's reach on the work surface before beginning to disassemble the watch.

    2

Remove the front of the pocket watch. The front and back of many American made or vintage watches will screw off. Wear rubber gloves to improve your grip. Hold the watch face up in your left hand and twist the front to the left.

    3

If the front does not screw off, the watch case may be snapped together. Turn the watch to look at it from the side. The seams where the front of the watch attach to the body should be visible. Look for a lip in the seam. Insert the tip of a case knife into the seam and twist gently.

    4

Remove the hands from the face of the watch with the hands remover tool.

    5

Place the tissue paper over the watch face. Trace around the face using the pencil. This will be a template.

    6

Cut along the lines on the tissue paper.

    7

Lay the tissue paper template on the craft paper. Cut around the edges. The trimmed craft paper is the back of the locket. Check to be sure it fits securely over the watch face and make adjustments as necessary. Use glue to attach craft paper to the watch face.

    8

Use tissue paper template to cut photo the same size. Glue photo to craft paper. A touch of glue is enough to affix the photo to the paper. Too much may bleed through to the photo.

    9

Reassemble the watch by twisting or snapping the front to the case body.
