What Is an Artificial Diamond?

    An artificial diamond is a diamond that is produced by technology. Natural diamonds are produced by the geological compression of carbon. Artificial diamonds are also known as synthetic diamonds. They are not the same as the substance known as diamond-like carbon. Nor are they related to diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia. Synthetic diamonds technically are real diamonds and may have characteristics that are either inferior to, the same as, or better than naturally occurring diamonds.

How Are Artificial Diamonds Made?

    There are a variety of ways to make artificial diamonds. The first commonly used method utilizes high-pressure machines that weigh several thousand pounds and temperatures of up to 1500 degrees Celsius. These conditions simulate the natural conditions under which diamonds form. Other options include vaporizing carbon atoms and creating an environment that allows them to form a diamond structure.

What Are Artificial Diamonds Used for?

    Artificial gemstones can be used for several purposes. They are frequently used in electronics, as conductive diamonds are a useful electrode. Diamonds are also useful as drill bits and other cutting tools, especially for cutting alloys without iron. Finally, many companies make artificial diamonds as gemstones. These are constructed using high-pressure, high-temperature processes and are in many ways similar to naturally occurring diamonds. These diamonds can be made with or without color. While these stones cost less in comparison with naturally occurring diamonds, they are very similar in all characteristics.
