Italian charm bracelets started in Italy, where the soccer players were known to wear them. During the 1990s, American tourists brought them home and Italian charm bracelets became very popular. The stainless steel construction and sturdy assembly make Italian charm bracelets durable. Unlike charms that dangle, Italian charms are interlocking links, similar to those on a stainless watch band.

The Bracelet

Italian charm bracelets are sold with 18 blank links. Adding links, or charms, to personalize your bracelet requires removing a blank link and replacing it with the charm. Bracelets are usually made of stainless steel links but personalized links have embellishments that can be made of pewter, silver, platinum, gold or jewels.

Adding a Link

The process you use to stretch the bracelet to fit over your hand is the same process you will use to add a link:

Hold the link you want to remove with your right hand and anchor the bracelet with your left. Slide the middle of the link in your right hand out toward the left by pressing down on the center with your thumb. Now, turn the charm upward to slide the hook at the bottom up and over the edge of the other link. The bracelet will come apart.

Use your left thumb to slide the middle of the charm to the left. At the same time, open the new charm by sliding the middle of it toward the right with your right thumb. Hold the new charm perpendicular to the end of the charm in your left hand, and slide the opening on the bottom through the end of the link. Repeat these steps on the other side to link the charms together.
