How to Make a French Hair Comb

French hair combs are rectangular hair accessories made of plastic or metal. They have several comb teeth held together by a straight edge and can be used either to pin hairstyles in place or simply can be inserted into the hair for decoration. Although you can buy a wide range of hair combs in the shops, making your own not only saves money but will also give you a hair accessory that no one else will be wearing. The process is simple, it requires little preparation, and the materials are cheap, so it will take little time to get ready and unleash your creative side.

Instructions

    1

Use beads. Glue them to the top of the hair comb in a pattern of your choosing. Embellishments you can use include rhinestones, pearls or other costume jewelery beads.

    2

Thread some beads on beading wire and glue the design to the top of the hair comb for a more decorative hair piece. A 28-gauge wire can be used with smaller beads, such as seed beads.

    3

Find some fabric flowers from craft shops and glue these to the top of the head comb. They are available in all shapes and sizes, and you can either use one large flower or several smaller ones.

    4

Re-use old jewelery. Try separating old brooch heads from their pins and gluing them to the hair comb for a vintage look. This is useful for recycling old or broken jewelery.

    5

Look through fabric shops for decorative trim. You'll be able to find a range of materials and colors. Try taking a plain hair comb with you to see which trims would work well before buying.

    6

Recycle old clothes and use the fabric to make bows or buy the bows ready-made from a craft store. You can make your own by folding strips of fabric and gluing them in place, before attaching the bow to the head comb.
