How to Clean Marcasite

Marcasite is extremely attractive, not only because of its shiny black iridescence but because of the affordability. These inexpensive pieces can be found in the form of rings, brooches, pendants, bracelets and watches. They have an antique feel and are generally found in sterling silver. Perfect for a jewelry-lover on a budget!

Instructions

    1

Because Marcasite is held into place with water-soluble epoxy, instead of traditional jewelry prongs, you cannot allow it to sit in water. Doing so will result in losing the stones.

    2

You also can not soak the Marcasite piece in a jewelry solvent. It is much too strong and can remove the epoxy while damaging the stone itself.

    3

For cleaning, gently wipe the jewelry with a polishing cloth. Polishing cloths can be found at any retailer or jewelry store.

    4

If you do not have a polishing cloth handy, make sure you clean the Marcasite ONLY with cool water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush. Genlty rub the surface with the brush to remove any buildup or chemicals.

    5

Immediately dry the Marcasite with a soft, clean cloth completely. Because Marcasite is very delicate and small, it require extra gentle care.

    6

When wearing the piece of jewelry, avoid applying lotions or perfumes directly on it.
