How to Care for an Omega Chain

Omega chains are necklaces or bracelets made by assembling metal plates. "Chain" is somewhat of a misnomer since omega chains are not a series of linked rings. However, the plates give the illusion of links. Omega chains are normally made of silver or gold. To care for an omega chain, take special precautions when wearing, storing and cleaning the item.

Instructions

    1

Hang omega chains or lay flat to store. Avoid squeezing the chain into a tight compartment or box, as the chain is stiff and not flexible enough to withstand being forced into a twist. Store the chain so it is not touching other jewelry items, particularly other metals or jewels. Metals may tarnish the chain and certain jewels, such as diamonds, may scratch the gold or silver plates.

    2

Remove the chain before showering, since shampoo and soap can erode the metal and cause the plates to dull. Avoid bathing in a pool with the chain, since chlorine can also discolor the gold or silver. Adorn the chain after you have applied hair spray, lotions, fragrances and other cosmetics, as the chemicals in these products can cause discolor the metal plates.

    3

Wash your omega chain in soap and water. Alternatively, use a commercial jewelry cleaner, provided it is pH-balanced and ammonia free. Dip the chain into the solution and rub with a soft chamois cloth. Dip a toothbrush into the solution and brush the chain to clean the grooves between the plates where dirt, grease and oil collect.
