Freshwater pearl jewelry accentuates your wardrobe. Pearls may be spherical, asymmetrical or rice-shaped and are found in a variety of colors, including white, peach and lavender. Pearls are composed of calcium carbonite and are considered an organic gem. They are soft and easily scratched or damaged; therefore, they require special care. With a bit of extra attention, your pearls will maintain their beauty and last a lifetime.

Instructions

    1

Store your pearls separately from the rest of your jewelry. Other pieces of jewelry can scratch a pearl's delicate surface. Wrap them in a soft cloth or a soft lined pouch. Dryness will cause your pearls to crack, so never store them in an airtight box or plastic bag.

    2

Put on your pearls after dressing. Hairspray, perfume and cosmetics stain pearls.

    3

Remove your pearls before anything else when you are undressing.

    4

Polish your pearls with a soft lint-free cloth when you are done wearing them. Perspiration and your body's natural oils can dull the finish.

    5

Wash your pearls periodically using water and a soft cloth. Rinse them with clear water and allow them to thoroughly air-dry before you store them. Use acetone polish remover to remove any stubborn build-up.

    6

Restring your pearls every one or two years if you wear them regularly. This prevents the silk or nylon strand from breaking. Make sure that there is a knot between every pearl so none fall off the strand if it breaks. Knotting also prevents pearls from rubbing against each other, which can cause damage.
