Freshwater pearl jewelry accentuates your wardrobe. Pearls may be spherical, asymmetrical or rice-shaped and are found in a variety of colors, including white, peach and lavender. Pearls are composed of calcium carbonite and are considered an organic gem. They are soft and easily scratched or damaged; therefore, they require special care. With a bit of extra attention, your pearls will maintain their beauty and last a lifetime.
Instructions
- 1
Store your pearls separately from the rest of your jewelry. Other pieces of jewelry can scratch a pearl's delicate surface. Wrap them in a soft cloth or a soft lined pouch. Dryness will cause your pearls to crack, so never store them in an airtight box or plastic bag.
2Put on your pearls after dressing. Hairspray, perfume and cosmetics stain pearls.
3Remove your pearls before anything else when you are undressing.
4Polish your pearls with a soft lint-free cloth when you are done wearing them. Perspiration and your body's natural oils can dull the finish.
5Wash your pearls periodically using water and a soft cloth. Rinse them with clear water and allow them to thoroughly air-dry before you store them. Use acetone polish remover to remove any stubborn build-up.
6Restring your pearls every one or two years if you wear them regularly. This prevents the silk or nylon strand from breaking. Make sure that there is a knot between every pearl so none fall off the strand if it breaks. Knotting also prevents pearls from rubbing against each other, which can cause damage.
