Diamonds are the most popular gemstones and are prized for the hardness, their ability to refract light and their color. The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek meaning unbreakable or unalterable. Diamonds are rated by the using the four C's including clarity, color, cut and carat.
Clarity
Clarity describes the purity of the diamond, which is determined by the number, size, nature and location of the impurities. The clarity is broken down into 11 rankings with flawless being the most expensive and I3 being the least.
Color
Color describes the amount of color that exists in the diamonds. White is rated from D, the clearest, to I. Near colorless is rated from J, the most white, to L. As you go down the alphabet, the diamond gets more and more yellow.
Cut - Facets
The cut can be broken into two categories: how many facets it has and the shape. Cut can refer to the number of facets on the diamond. This will determine how the diamond sparkles.
Cut - Shape
Cut can also refer to the shape of a diamond. It can be round, pear, oval, heart, emerald, princess or radiant.
Carat
The carat refers to the weight of a diamond. The value per carat of a diamond increases as the diamond gets larger because larger diamonds are more rare. Thus, a two-carat diamond will be more than twice as expensive as a one-carat diamond of the same clarity, color and cut.
