Clarity Enhanced Diamonds Vs. Real Diamonds

Clarity-enhanced diamonds are real diamonds, but they have been subjected to a type of treatment to either remove or obscure clarity flaws in the stone. A common clarity-enhancement treatment is using a laser to remove internal blemishes known as inclusions.

Monetary Value

The monetary value of a diamond is determined by the stone's characteristics in cut, color, clarity and carat weight. This standard is applied to all diamonds and is considered fair because diamonds are typically only cut and polished.

Clarity-enhanced diamonds, however, may look better than some flawed diamonds, but they are not valued higher. The value of a clarity-enhanced diamond is equal to that of a flawed stone. While the diamond may look flawless, the enhancement treatment diminishes the durability of the stone.

Aesthetic Value

Clarity enhancement can increase the aesthetic value of a diamond. If the diamond's flaws can be seen by the naked eye, having them removed may trump any monetary depreciation of the stone. Clarity enhancement is ultimately a personal decision for the diamond's owner.

Identification

To confirm whether or not the diamond you are interested in buying has been clarity enhanced, ask to see the Gemological Institute of America certification, which will state the diamond's history.

If you do not receive a G.I.A. certificate when purchasing a diamond, ask the jeweler to note that it has not been clarity enhanced in the appraisal.
