Cubic zirconia is a multi-use synthetic gem often used as a diamond substitute. It is especially popular because it is flawless and is often difficult to differentiate between it and actual diamonds. The similarities are so great between the two that they can often only be distinguished by their weight because cubic zirconia is heavier than diamond. The durability and prominence of cubic zirconia make it a popular, inexpensive gemstone.
Lazer Technology
In the 1970s Russian scientists developed cubic zirconia to be used in laser technology as a substitute for rubies. Although cubic zirconia and rubies are not similar in terms of gemology, the human-made gem does mirror some of the properties of a ruby.
Jewelery
The 1980s saw the emergence of jewelery featuring cubic zirconia. Wedding and engagement rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings all feature the synthetic gemstone. In 2010, cubic zirconia continues to be used in a variety of jewelery pieces, and it has evolved into a rainbow of colored gemstones.
Music Technology
In 2008 the media company Panasonic released a set of headphones using pieces of cubic zirconia. The synthetic gemstone was used inside sound chambers in the headphones to suppress sound distortion. Cubic zirconia was used because it had less resonance than plastic or aluminum, therefore producing clearer sound.
