Tarnish on silver is unpleasant to look at, and over time, it will damage your jewelry or tableware. Silver becomes tarnished as a result of use as well as exposure to chemicals in the air and on skin. Cleaning tarnish from your silver can be an expensive and time-consuming process if you have it done professionally.
However, you can also clean up your tarnished silver using items you already have in your home. Ammonia provides a simple, inexpensive way to remove tarnish from your silver.
Instructions
- 1
Work in a well-ventilated area when using ammonia as a household cleaner. Avoid spilling the ammonia cleaning solution on other items.
2Add 2 tsp. of liquid dish washing soap and 1 tsp. of household ammonia to 1/4 cup of water. Mix the solution well.
3Dip a cotton swab into the mixture and gently scrub the silver until the tarnish is removed. Use a clean cotton cloth for removing tarnish from larger silver items.
4Place silver in the solution if scrubbing does not remove the tarnish. Allow the silver to soak for 30 to 40 minutes.
5Remove the silver from the solution and scrub it with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
6Dry and polish the silver with a clean cotton cloth before storing or using it again.
