How Are Gold Bands Made?

Although each jeweler has his own special technique for making gold bands, there is a basic sequence that is followed to create these traditional pieces of jewelry.

Design

Each gold band has a basic format that must be envisioned by the jeweler before creating the mold. This includes the ring size, width of the band and any additional elements that are to be included, like precious gemstones.

Material

Depending on the quality of the ring being constructed, gold can be found in one karat up to 24 karat. The karat is calculated based on the purity of the specimen, with 24 karat being the highest amount of pure gold.

Shaping

Once the gold has been heated up and poured into the cast, or mold, of the ring, a jeweler uses instruments like a milling machine, pliers and saws. Once the ring has been shaped to the appropriate length and width, the two edges are joined with a soldering tool.

Finish

The jeweler completes the ring when she buffs and polishes it to a gleam. Any other finishing touches will be applied at this time, like a personal engraving. The ring is then ready to be sold or worn.
