Special Properties of Diamonds

Diamonds are rare gemstones that are used for a wide variety of purposes. While you may associate diamonds with jewelry, their unique properties contribute to their use in tools, machines and precision instruments.

Hardness

    Diamonds are the hardest stones in the world. In fact, there is no naturally occurring substance harder than a diamond. Diamonds can scratch glass and other stones and are nearly impossible to chip or break. Because of this property, tiny diamonds are often used in saw blades and grinders, making the blades more durable and more effective.

Color

    Once a diamond has been processed and refined, it should be almost entirely clear. Diamonds are usually colorless, though colored variants exist and usually fetch higher prices. Before processing, diamonds are black and filled with impurities. Diamonds also have an adamantine luster, which is the highest possible luster for a substance that is not made of metal.

Heat Conductivity

    Diamonds are among the most effective natural conductors of heat known to man. This property makes diamonds ideal for operations in which preserving heat and energy are critical to success. You can often tell the difference between fake and natural diamonds by holding them in your hand and seeing which one warms up the fastest.

Crystal Structure

    Crystals within a diamond look the same from any angle, much the way that a sphere always looks like a sphere. Diamond crystals are so symmetrical that they cannot be modified or deformed to increase symmetry. These crystal structures are embedded deep within the diamond.
