Meaning of a Pink Sapphire

A pink sapphire is a pink-colored gemstone in the corundrum group. The pinkish color comes from chromium impurities in a compound that is predominantly aluminum oxide. Gems with a greater percentage of chromium impurities are a deeper red and are designated as rubies.

Meaning

The meanings associated with pink sapphire are generally related to the warmth and cultural properties of the pinkish color. Pink sapphires, like the color pink, are associated in many cultures with romance, love and friendship. They can also signify balance (for the balanced combination of "white" and "red" pigmentation), innocence, forgiveness and insight into the subconscious.

Zodiac and Birthstone

Pink sapphires, like all sapphires, are the birthstone for people born in September. They are also thought to bring special good fortune to Librans (those born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 24).

Padparadscha

Gemologists and gem historians have defined a special kind of pink sapphire called the "padparadscha." These gems are a particular yellow-pink color and are generally described as coming from Sri Lanka, although they can be found elsewhere. They are highly prized and more valuable than ordinary pink sapphires.
