How to Fix a Loose Engagement Ring

A proposal is often one of the most exciting moments of a woman's life, but this excitement can be short lived upon the realization that the engagement ring does not fit properly. Whether the ring is simply too big from the beginning or has become looser over time due to weight loss, there are a few different options available for remedying a ring that is too large.

Instructions

    1

Take the ring to a jeweler and get an estimate for sizing. The jeweler will be able to professionally size the ring, although this is the most costly option. Sometimes sizing is the best and most lasting option for a ring with sentimental or monetary value.

    2

Use a ring spacer. Ring spacers fit inside the band, lessening the amount of loose space. One variety of ring spacer is a clear cushion that fits around the band, resulting in a better fit. Ring spacers are inexpensive and generally made of plastic.

    3

Wrap clear tape around the back of the ring band until the ring fits comfortably. Although this isn't a permanent solution, the ring can be taped as often as necessary. The tape may be removed if you decide to use a different remedy. Yarn can be used instead of tape, but is a bit unsightly.

    4

Purchase a ring guard. Ring guards are similar to ring spacers, but are typically made from higher quality materials, such as gold or silver. Ring guards are particularly effective in the case of a ring with a heavy gem, since these rings can often slide around the finger due to the weight of the stone. Many jewelers sell ring guards.
