Caring for a Locket Necklace

Necklace lockets have a long and intriguing history. They have been used to carry poisons as well as good luck charms, hair and pictures. Lockets have been constructed in a number of different metals, including brass, copper, silver, gold and platinum. In addition, they may be inscribed or adorned with gemstones. Today lockets are often treasured both for their beauty and because they carry a remembrance of someone loved. As such, you want to care properly for your locket so it will last you a lifetime.

    1

Close your locket by pressing gently on the edge with the latch. If you press in the center of your locket, you can harm it.

    2

Open your locket halfway only. That is as far as they are designed to open.

    3

Wipe your locket off with a cotton cloth after you wear it.

    4

Clean your locket using jewelry cleaners designed for the metal it is made of. If your locket has gemstones, you will also need to consider their cleaning requirements.

    5

Keep your locket away from chemicals such as perfume, hair products and deodorants. Put on your makeup and style your hair before you put on your locket.

    6

Take your locket off when you bathe or swim.

    7

Store your locket correctly. Keep it separated from your other jewelry to prevent scratching. Placing your locket in a plastic or cloth jewelry bag or the box it came in are good ways to protect it. If your locket has gemstones such as pearls, you must store it in fabric so the gemstones can breathe.
