How to Tie a Vertical Knot

A vertical knot, also called a vertical larks head knot, is commonly used to tie knots when making jewelry. A vertical larks head knot is tied to a ring or charm to secure it to the necklace or bracelet, while also looking aesthetically pleasing. Vertical knots can also be tied to create the actual necklace or bracelet itself. By tying vertical knots around a central holding chord, you can create and customize a patterned bracelet or necklace.

Instructions

    1

Use a pair of scissors to cut a strand of thin rope or string at least 60 inches long.

    2

Hold the rope with one end in each hand. Fold the rope in half so the ends of the rope are on one side and a loop has been made on the other.

    3

Place the loop underneath and through the center of the ring. Take the two ends of the rope and wrap them around the ring. Insert the two ends of the rope through the loop. The two strands should lay underneath the loop. Pull the two ends of the rope to tighten the first knot.

    4

Take the rope on your right hand side and place it up, over and through the center of the ring. Pull the strand through the ring.

    5

Guide the same strand under and through the ring forming a loop. Insert the strand through the loop and pull it through. Repeat these steps to tie vertical larks head knots back to back until you have reached a desired length for your bracelet or necklace. If you are just tying a rope or string to a ring to hang a charm, you only need to tie one knot.
