How to Care for an Amber Necklace

Amber is a stone that takes millions of years to form from fossilized tree resin. Since amber is naturally found and not created in a lab, each stone is unique and may include small imperfections. When amber has been harvested and made into jewelry, such as a necklace, it requires gentle care to make sure that it lasts. Amber can be brittle and soft. Chemicals that you come into contact with daily can negatively impact amber. By taking the time to be gentle and care for your amber necklace, it will last for years to come.

How to Care for an Amber Necklace

    1

Apply make up, perfumes and any other cosmetic products prior to putting on your amber necklace. By applying cosmetics before the jewelry, you will minimize the chance of getting chemicals on the amber. Exposing amber to chemicals can damage the stone.

    2

Spread one drop of olive oil over the amber with a soft cloth and buff until the olive oil is no longer present. This will restore the amber to the original shine.

    3

Remove your amber necklace gently after wearing and avoid hitting it onto a counter or other hard object. Amber is brittle and may break with extreme force.

    4

Do not wear amber when showering, swimming or when you will be sweating. Moisture and chemicals can harm amber. If you accidentally expose amber to moisture, wipe it dry with a soft cloth.

    5

Store amber in a jewelry pouch or jewelry box. This keeps the amber away from other pieces of jewelry that may hit the amber and break it. It also keeps amber from sunlight, which can damage the stone.
