Star sapphires, also known as Linde (pronounced "lyn-dee") sapphires, are especially brilliant gemstones. Sapphires and rubies are the same type of gem---the only real difference is in their color---and both can naturally occur with a six-pointed star in the center of the gem.
Sapphires are almost as tough as diamonds (scale 9 as compared to diamonds' scale 10) and can therefore be cared for in a similar manner.

Although sapphires are durable gemstones, always remove them before strenuous activity or before contact with harsh chemicals. Be sure to store the star sapphire in a safe place.
2The best method of cleaning a star sapphire is washing it in soapy warm water. Pat dry with a cotton towel to avoid scratches. Always clean your star sapphire over a bowl, not in the sink over a drain, where it could get lost. Never use mechanical methods to clean a star sapphire.
If you need deep cleaning, allow the sapphire to soak in warm soapy water for approximately 10 minutes. Use a makeup brush to remove any excess dirt after the soaking process is complete.
To retain their brilliance, store star sapphires in a cloth-lined closed jewelry box when not in use. Keep away from other gemstones to prevent damage to your jewelry. (The star sapphire may scratch the other stones).
