A closely fitted bangle, the Caribbean Hook bracelet goes by many names: St. Croix bracelet, USVI hook bracelet, Cruzan or Crucian bracelet, "J" hook bracelet, and Island bracelet. Though many jewelry designers claim to have designed this popular souvenir and iconic symbol of travel to the US Virgin Islands, the origin of the bracelet is unclear. The bracelet's decorative U-shaped clasp is worn on the top of the wrist. According to various versions of Caribbean folklore, the orientation of the clasp holds special meaning.

Open the clasp on the bracelet by depressing the hook portion of the clasp or gently bending the bracelet so the hook clears the U-shaped portion of the latch. Open the bangle slightly so it can fit onto your wrist.
2Hold the bracelet over the wrist that you will wear it on. Turn the bracelet so the open portion of the U is facing your fingers to indicate that you are single and that your heart is available. Place the bracelet on your wrist and position the hook into the U portion of the clasp to close. According to folklore, orienting the bracelet in this direction also beckons good fortune to come to you.
3If you are not single, turn the bracelet so the closed portion of the U is facing your fingers and the concave side faces your heart to indicate that your heart has been claimed by another. Close the clasp. Wearing the bracelet with the clasp oriented in this direction may also indicate that you will share your good fortune with others.
