What Is a Cushion Cut Diamond?

Diamonds are available in a wide variety of shapes, from the simple round cut diamond to the more intricate heart-shaped diamond. One of the lesser-known shapes is the cushion cut diamond. Although this cut is not very popular, it has a classically romantic look.

History

Although the cushion cut diamond is not as popular as other diamond shapes, such as the round cut, princess cut or Asscher cut, it is an antique cut that has existed for more than a century. These diamonds are sometimes referred to as pillow-cut diamonds or candlelight diamonds.

Identification

The cushion cut diamond is available in a few shapes, ranging from squares to long rectangles. The corners are rounded, and the diamond features larger facets, which increase the stone's brilliance.

Standards

As with all other diamonds, cushion cut diamonds are available in a variety of standards. When purchasing a cushion cut diamond, the buyer should consider its clarity, carat size, cut and color.

Options

Cushion cut diamonds are a popular choice for engagement rings, either as a solitaire or with accent stones. Rings with a cushion cut diamond will require at least four prongs in the setting to hold the stone in place; larger diamonds will require additional prongs.

Considerations

Cushion cut diamonds are difficult to find in small sizes. Someone seeking a diamond that is less than 1 carat may have only a small selection of cushion cut diamonds from which to choose.
