Magnetic earrings are an accessory worn by people who like the look of pierced jewelry but don't want all the piercings. It's a particularly appealing option for teenagers whose parents do not allow multiple piercings.
Magnetic earrings are an inexpensive and creative accessory. However, parents and wearers of these earrings should be aware that there are a few problems associated with them.
Losing the Earring
Magnetic earrings can easily fall off and be lost. They are fairly inexpensive, however, so if you love a particular style, buy more than one of a favorite pair so a lost earring won't result in disappointment.
Swallowing Hazard
The recall of the magnetic toys Magnetix in 2006 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission highlighted the dangers of toys containing small magnets. According to a Chicago Tribune article (see Resource 1), a child who swallowed several of the small magnetic objects died when the magnets adhered inside his intestinal tract, causing a fatal blockage. Though the magnets in earrings may not represent a choking hazard, they still pose a risk of injury and death if multiple magnets are swallowed. The Consumer Product Safety Commission website further describes the danger in detail. (See Reference 3.)
Dangerous for the Nose
Magnetic earrings can become embedded in delicate body tissue. This has been demonstrated in cases where magnetic jewelry was used to adorn the nose in place of a piercing. When the magnets are placed inside the nasal cavity, there is a risk of them becoming embedded in the nasal septum, and removal in a medical setting might be needed. (See Resource 1.)
