The design focal point of an initial (or signet) ring is a letter, presumably one that belongs to the wearer's name. Initial rings come in an infinite array of shapes, sizes, and materials. Some rings have a thick, chunky or blocked design, whereas others have a more sleek, thin appearance. Some rings include a small stone embellishment, but most are merely the initial in the center of a ring. The rings are made of silver, gold, platinum, or plated metal. They can cost $30, for a sterling silver ring, or hundreds of dollars for a platinum ring made by a fine jeweler.

Basic Shape

Most women's initial rings have a thin band that widens in the top center creating a flat surface for the initial to be engraved on. The rings are either yellow or white gold, sterling silver, platinum, gold plated, or solid gold. The surface the initial is placed in is usually a circle, oval, or more rarely a heart shape.

Text and Font

Initial rings can be engraved with various texts and/or fonts. The purchaser will have to choose between what the jeweler offers. A fine jeweler might offer an initial in a complex cursive font that is difficult to make (and therefore more expensive). There are many online jewelry stores that offer simple, elegant fonts for female initial rings. The only have one font to pick from, and one band style, but the ring is considerably less expensive that way.

Alternative styles

There are alternative styles that deviate from the basic format. Some ring bands are scalloped on the edge of the initial base (top of the ring). Some band edges are designed in a curlicue pattern that hug the base. Some patterns are intricately cut from the base down each side of the band almost all the way around. On some rings the letter is cut and soldered to the top of the band itself, rather than engraved into part of the band.
