The Difference Between Radiant & Cushion Cut Diamonds

Radiant and cushion are two different styles of diamond cut. The cut of a diamond is one of four C factors used to judge a stone, the others being clarity, color and carat weight.

Radiant

Based off an emerald cut, the radiant cut was patented by the Radiant Cut Diamond Company in the late 1970s. The patent has since run out and the company now markets Original Radiant Cut stones, which contain the requisite proportions and number of facets first envisioned by the cuts creator. The cut combined the brilliance of a rounded-edge cut with the more traditional step cut of a straight-edged stone.

Cushion

A cushion is an older cut designed to have a less fiery, more classic feel. It is sometimes called a pillow cut or candlelight cut and is a cousin to the old mine cut.

Brilliance

Cushion cuts are designed for a somewhat more traditional look that does not emphasize brilliance whereas radiant cuts are designed with more sparkle in mind. Radiants can hide more flaws because of this. Both cuts come in square and rectangular configurations.

Radiant origin

The radiant cut was invented by Henry Grossbard, a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria. His vision was to reignite the waning demand for the rounder emerald cut by making it more brilliant and giving it more fire, hence its name.

Cushion origin

Cushion cuts date back to the early 19th century and became a heavily used style after their introduction. Since then, they have declined in popularity in favor of todays round cut.
