How to Clean a Pearl Necklace

Pearl necklaces are often worn for special occasions such as weddings and frequently have been passed down generation to generation. Over time they lose luster from ordinary wear and improper storage and need cleaning. There are many cleaning methods but some can actually damage delicate pearl surfaces. Care should be used in routinely cleaning away traces of perspiration, cosmetics and hairspray, so that the pearl necklace retains its original beauty.

Place a dry towel on a flat surface. The towel should be of a soft type of material so there isn't any danger of scratching the pearl necklace. Spread the necklace out on the towel.

Put a little water into a small bowl. Do not add any soap if they are older pearls or an heirloom necklace. Soap of any kind can damage delicate older pearls because they are made out of organic material. Newer pearls can withstand a very small amount of mild soap.

Dip a clean soft cloth into the water in the bowl and wring out the excess water. Gently wipe the damp soft cloth down the length of the strand of pearls. Do not use pressure but more of a gentle dabbing down the strand.

Turn the pearls over and repeat the dabbing process on the other side. If the mild soap was used in this process, rinse the pearls by dabbing again with a damp cloth free of soap.

Use a dry part of the towel to pat the pearls dry. If the pearls are too dirty for this process to clean them thoroughly take them to the desired jeweler for safe cleaning.
