Ideal Cut Vs. Fine Cut Diamond

When evaluating and judging diamonds, the "Four Cs" help to determine the value of the gemstone. They are color, clarity, carat-weight and cut. Among the six types of cuts,"ideal" and "fine" cuts describe the way in which the diamond is "faceted to catch and reflect light," according to Loose Diamonds Reviews.

Ideal Cut

The Ideal cut is the highest grade of cut available for a diamond, and offers more brilliance in its ability to interact with light than any other type of cut. This is because an ideal cut passes light through its many cuts and facets, bouncing it around through the refractions and finally out through the top, giving it the "icy fire" characteristic.

Fine Cut

Fine cut, depending upon the classification system, is rated as the third or second best type of cut available for a diamond, and still represents a high-quality diamond. Differences between the ideal and fine cut include a slightly larger culet, which is the point on the bottom of the diamond's pavilion. A fine cut may only take one or two days to create, while an ideal cut may take up to four or more days. Fine cut diamonds also have a more shallow crown, fewer facets, a deeper pavilion and a thicker girdle. Fin

Price Differences

The pricing between an ideal cut and a fine cut may be as much as 20 percent, according to Loose Diamonds Reviews. As a result, you can purchase a bigger sized diamond for less money if you are willing to sacrifice some quality concerns with the cut.
