Stainless silver utensils are made from an easy-care stainless steel metal. Prior to 1915, most silverware settings contained real silver that would tarnish, blacken and scratch easily. After the January 31, 1915 edition of the New York Times announced that the new no-rust stainless steel technology could be used for cutlery, many silverware settings were made to look like silver, using the stainless steel metals. Modern stainless silver is very easy to care for in a dishwasher or through hand washings.
