Their rarity and the difficulty involved in mining diamonds make them extremely valuable. One of the biggest factors influencing diamond value is the diamond's weight, which is directly proportional to the diamond's size. Knowing the gemstone's dimensions, you can calculate its weight to provide insight on a diamond's value.

Measure the height, width and depth (in millimeters) of the diamond using a ruler or threaded micrometer.
2Calculate the volume of the diamond using the dimensions obtained in Step 1 by multiplying the height, width and depth together. For example, if the dimensions of the diamond are 4 mm high, 5 mm wide and 4 mm deep, the volume would be 80 mm^3 (4 mm * 5 mm * 4 mm).
3Multiply the diamond's volume by the density of diamond to obtain the diamond's mass. The density of diamond is 3.5 g/cm^3 = 0.0035 g/mm^3 (3.5/1,000). For example, if the diamond volume is 80 mm^3, the mass of the diamond is 0.28 g (80 * 0.0035).
4Divide the mass of the diamond obtained in Step 3 by the number of grams in 1 carat to convert the diamond mass into carat. One carat is equal to 200 mg, or 0.2 g; therefore, a diamond weighing 0.28 g is 1.40 carats.
