What Is a Table Cut Diamond?

A table-cut diamond has been cut so that its top is a flat square, like a table. The other sides of the stone are cut into a rounded facet to enhance the diamond's sparkle.

Jewelry Pieces

Diamonds are cut in this manner for all kinds of jewelry, such as rings, brooches, earrings and necklaces.

Popularity

It's common to see antique jewelry from the 17th century and the early 18th century that features table-cut stones because the style was popular during that time frame.

Gemstone Terminology

A table-cut diamond shouldn't be confused with the table of a gemstone. The top facet on any cut gem is called a table, but it can be oval or rounded, not just square.

Asscher Cut

Another cutting style that can be confused with a table cut is the Asscher cut. This style is also known as "table cut" because its facets are stacked like steps beneath the gem's table.

Famous Stone

One famous table-cut diamond is the Darya-i-Nur stone that was discovered in India in 1642. The pale pink diamond weighs more than 180 carats.
