How to Test Raw Gold

Gold has always held a special position in history. Gold has served as a tangible measure of wealth, as well as a pure medium for common currency. Ever since its discovery, many have worked diligently to accumulate rich, pure, unadulterated gold. And, just as persistently, other less reputable characters have subtly hawked their cheap imitations to unsuspecting prey. You can test raw gold to be sure it is genuine and avoid these hucksters.

Instructions

    1

Hold the gold up to a strong magnet. Gold is a non-ferrous metal. If the magnet shows any attraction to the gold then it cannot be pure gold.

    2

Introduce it to some sulfuric acid. Pure gold will not dissolve in acid. If your piece dissolves then it was not pure. Always use appropriate caution when working with acid. Use gloves and safety goggles.

    3

Take it to an expert. Most local jewelry stores will perform a professional test on your gold for free. They will also be able to tell you the quality of the gold.

    4

Purchase a home testing kit. You can order a home testing kit that will come with all the items you need and the instructions on how to test your gold and determine its quality.

    5

Scratch it against glass. According to Mohs scale of mineral hardness, pure gold has a rating between 2.5 to 3.0. Glass has a hardness rating somewhere between 6 and 7. Your gold should not be able to scratch glass, if it does then its likely fake.
