Pearls are elegant, timeless and a perfect gift for just about any occasion. Because of the high occurrence of fake pearls, it's important to know what your beautiful strand of pearls is worth. There are many factors that play into a pearl's worth, and knowing what they are can help you in future pearl purchases, to ensure that you get the best value.

Consider the pearl's luster, or shine. It is the single most important factor when it comes to valuing pearls. A pearl's luster can be categorized as exceptional, fine or dull, depending on its shine. Exceptional pearls are worth the most, while dull pearls are worth the least.
2Look at the pearl's color. Pearls now come in many different colors, and typically the rarer the color, the more valuable the pearl is. While we are all accustomed to white pearls, silver pearls, rose pearls and pale gold pearls are worth the most because they are more rare.
3Notice the shape of a pearl. Round pearls are always the most valuable. Check for complete symmetry. Those pearls with perfect symmetry are more valuable.
4Feel and examine the surface of the pearl with a magnifying glass. A valuable pearl will be completely blemish free. If a pearl has marks or blemishes on it, it will affect its value. Its skin should be smooth and perfect for the highest value.
5Measure the size of the pearl. A larger pearl will be more valuable. Pearls range from 8mm to about 18mm. Your pearl's value will be directly relatable to its size.
