A gemstone is a mineral, rock, or organic material used in making jewelry. Loose gemstones may be purchased individually and then taken to a jeweler to be placed in such items as rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and tie tacks. Gravity, hardness, size, and color are all classifications used when describing gemstones. Although gravity, hardness, and color are more difficult to determine, measuring loose gemstones for size is a much simpler skill set. Different shaped gemstones are measured in slightly different ways.
Instructions
- 1
Measure the length and width of the gemstone. If the gemstone is irregularly shaped, measure from the two farthest points.
2Measure the diameter across the top if the stone is round.
3Determine the width of a heart-shaped gemstone by using a hypothetical line across the top of the two globes rather than measuring at the cleft. Determine the length from the top of one of the globes to a hypothetical line across the base.
