Jewelry can complete an outfit and even make an evening, but it always makes a statement. It does not do much at all, though, if it is dull and dirty. Keep jewelry looking its best by following jewelers' tips on polishing.
Professional Cleaning
Jewelers polish gold using a professional-grade jeweler's cloth that prevents scratching and a professional-grade water-based cleaning solution. Because no material is harder than diamonds, jewelers use diamonds themselves to polish these precious stones. Jewelers use hand-held devices, or full-size machines, that have a diamond wheel for polishing. This diamond wheel is sometimes covered in a thin layer of carbon to increase the finishing shine.
Cleaning at Home
Most jewelry, including gold and diamond pieces, can be cleaned at home using a simple solution of 1 cup water and either a few drops of soap for gold or 1/4 cup ammonia for diamonds. Both should be soaked for 15 to 20 minutes. A toothbrush can be used on gold items to remove excess soap. At-home cleaning will not be as thorough as a professional cleaning.
Warning
Any experienced jeweler will vehemently warn against ever tampering with or removing diamonds from jewelry settings, as the stone can easily be damaged or lost. Jewelers generally say it is best to visit a professional whenever cleaning is needed.
