Copper (Cu) is a metal and an element. It is malleable and a peach color when polished. Humans have used copper since the Chalcolithic Period (approximately 4500 to 3500 B.C.). Copper is needed to make brass and bronze. It has been used for tools, pipes, cookware, art and coins. Copper also has a long history of use in jewelry. Modern copper jewelry producers claim a number of health benefits associated with wearing copper jewelry.

Arthritis

There is significant anecdotal testimony that copper jewelry helps to alleviate the pain of arthritis.

Nervous System

Copper is used in the production of neurotransmitters, which are necessary for signal transmission in the nervous system.

Collagen

Copper is key to the production of collagen, a major component of connective tissues in the body.

Deficiency

Copper deficiency can lead to neurodegeneration (decay of nervous system tissues like neurons) and a type of anemia. Wearing copper could help with such deficiency.

Warning

Some solders (a filler metal used to joint two other pieces of metal) have lead in them and, if an incautious jeweler used such a solder, lead could be absorbed into the body. Always make sure any copper jewelry to be worn is lead free.
