Building a charm bracelet is a process that takes years. Charms often represent favorite hobbies, important life-landmarks, or are reminiscent of friends and family. Sometimes, however, it's hard to know where to start building a charm bracelet that really reflects you.
Traditional Charms
The traditional charm bracelet is a simple linked chain. Charms are usually about the size of a penny and are hung on the chain by a small hoop. Traditional charms can be found in a variety of places, from jewery stores such as Tiffany's (tiffany.com) and Kay's (kay.com), to department stores such as J.C. Penney (jcpenney.com) and Macy's (macys.com), to specialty stores such as Swarovski (swarovski.com). The jewelry chain Piercing Pagoda (pagoda.com) also has an enormous selection. You should also look in local gift shops and small jewelry stores--local stores will often have more personal charms.
Italian Charms
The chain of an Italian charm bracelet looks like a series of bricks linked together in a row with no spaces between them. To add charms, you replace the blank bricks with bricks that have stones, pictures, or other motifs on them. Italian charms can be found at Piercing Pagoda, ItalianCharms.com and Charmsland.com, and at local specialty stores.
Bead-Charm Bracelets
The newest trend in charm bracelets is a bracelet formed of beads where each bead is a charm. This originated in 1976 with a Danish company called Troll Beads (trollbeads.com). Today, Pandora (pandora.net) charms are among the most popular brands of this style of beads. Bead charms can be found at all major department stores and chain jewelry stores.
