In order to get a piercing without parental consent in the United States, you must be at least 18 years of age. However, even though you are legally allowed to go out and get a piercing, it doesn't necessarily mean your parents will be overly pleased if you come back sporting a lip ring. Fortunately, you can disguise a lip piercing and other piercings using a retainer. Retainers are clear, plastic barbells that are placed inside the piercing. They are almost invisible unless scrutinized carefully.
Instructions
- 1
Purchase a lip retainer that is the same diameter as your original piercing. This will prevent the hole in your lip from changing shape when you put the retainer in --- it will keep the piercing exactly the same as when it was first pierced.
2Remove your original lip piercing and set the jewelry aside for later use.
3Unscrew the end of the clear lip retainer and apply a small amount of lubricant so that the retainer will enter the piercing smoothly.
4Look into a mirror and gently push the barbell through the hole. It should fit perfectly. If it is too tight -- or doesn't go in at all -- you have purchased the wrong sized retainer for the job.
5Screw the end back onto the clear retainer.
