Emeralds are the traditional birthstone for the month of May. Emeralds are green gemstones that must be cleaned and handled more carefully than diamonds, as they may crack. If you are planning to purchase, or have already purchased, an emerald ring, it is important to learn about care and cleaning so you can protect this investment.
Instructions
- 1
Clean dust and light coatings of dirt off of your emerald ring by rubbing it with a soft cloth.
2Remove heavier soil from the ring with hand soap and water. First, wet the ring in warm water and place one drop of hand soap directly on it. Then, gently brush the back of the ring setting with a soft bristled toothbrush. This will remove oils and dirt that can collect there. Wash the rest of the ring with a damp, soapy cloth. Rinse the ring and then dry it with a soft cloth.
3Remove your emerald ring before doing yard work, cleaning your home, playing sports or performing any other activities where you may bump or knock the ring against hard surfaces. In addition, remove your ring before cooking or washing dirty dishes, as grease may collect around the ring setting.
4Store your emerald ring in a jewelry box, in its own compartment, away from other jewelry. This prevents the ring from knocking against other stones and metals which could scratch it.
