Russian Diamond Characteristics

In 1954, the first mined diamond was discovered in Russia. Russia continues to lead the world in volume and production of diamonds, as of 2011. The monetary value of a Russian diamond comes in second behind Botswana. The polishing techniques of Russian diamonds started Smolensk to perfect the manufacturing of a diamond gemstone. The techniques define the characteristics of the Russian diamond.

Symmetry

The geometric shape of a Russian diamond must be exactly symmetric. The outline of the diamond, shape and facets all must be even. Symmetry not only applies to the crown of the diamond, but the axis and cullet as well. Assessing the diamond can either be done by eye or by an optical measuring device.

Parameters

The tip of the cullet on a Russian diamond is pointed. The pavilion facets and the rib lines all come to one point along the diamond axis. No additional ribbing will be seen under magnification.

Polishing

Polishing is important to a Russian diamond. The surface of the diamond should be flat without any traces of tracks, scratches or graphitization under microscopic examination. This quality is what gives the diamond its beautiful, finished shine.

Girdle

Russian diamonds have a girdle that does not change in height and is uniform throughout. Often this quality is referred to as a "frosted girdle." The height of the girdle should range from 0.7 to 2.0 percent of the diamond's diameter.
