How do I Make Knots for Jewelry Fasteners?

Jewelry made from materials such as macrame, micro-macrame and various other non-metal materials can be clasped by tying a knot. Many different types of knots are typically used, depending on the desired look of the clasp. Knots sufficiently secure jewelry and guarantee that the jewelry will not come undone, fall off and get lost.

Tie a wrapped knot clasp. Take the two ends of the jewelry and lay them parallel to each other on a flat surface. Choose one end of the jewelry cord to be the working cord and fold it into a loop, so it resembles a bracelet or necklace. The looped cord will be the one making the wraps. Wrap the end of the working cord around the other cords, as well as itself, several times. Work towards the loop rather than the other end of the jewelry. After five to ten wraps, bring the cord end through the remaining portion of the loop and gradually pull to tighten the knot.

Tie an overhand knot clasp. Make a loop out of the end of the cord, then bring the cord up and over and pass it through the loop. Pull on the ends to tighten them. Chains of overhand knots are common; to accomplish this, repeat the overhand knot over and over to make adjacent knots.

Tie a barrel twist clasp. Tie an overhand knot on one end of the jewelry, making sure the cord crosses itself at the top of the loop. Take the segment of the cord to the right of the loop and wrap it around the right portion of the loop several times. Do this until it reaches the bottom of the loop. Repeat the same pattern with the left segment of cord and left side of the loop.
