Though a stone may look and feel like a diamond, you'll want to know if it's the real thing. Authenticity is especially important if you received the stone as a gift or want to have it appraised. There isn't one surefire method for testing a gem to find out if it's a diamond. But there are a few steps you can take on your own before you visit a professional who can help you determine its authenticity.
Instructions
- 1
Hold the stone upside down and place it in front of a newspaper page. See if you can read the print on the page by looking through the stone. If it's transparent enough to read through, chances are it is not a diamond. To be sure, you'll want to visit a specialist.
2Inhale deeply and then exhale slowly while holding the stone in front of your mouth. This is called a fog test and it's only partially reliable. If the clear gem fogs up and stays that way for more than two seconds, it's likely a fake. An authentic diamond would disperse heat instantly and not stay fogged up.
3Place the stone under a UV lamp. If it turns blue, it's likely a diamond of low quality. If it does not turn blue, it's either a higher-quality diamond or not a diamond at all.
4Make an appointment to visit a gemstone specialist once you have an idea of whether or not you have a diamond. You might have to pay a fee for the appraisal, and you'll want to be present during it. That way, you're more likely to get an honest opinion and avoid fraud or theft.
